OneUnited Bank announced its I Got Bank 4th Annual Essay Contest winners on September 2, 2015. The contest is designed to promote financial literacy for youth (ages 8 – 12).  We think you will agree… the winning essays not only share what they learned, but how they can use what they learned to help their friends and family.

Here is one of the three winning essays:

Jacqueline Monique Hernandez
South Gate, California
South Gate Middle School
Age: 12

What I learned from the book I Got Bank is that you can teach people about money to help them save money.  The story talks about how to save money.  I can help others by teaching them how to save.  By doing this, people will be able to save their own money.
I learned that by saving money, even if it’s a little bit of money you might end up with a lot more money than you started with.  I also learned that you should buy what you need instead of buying what you want.  What I learned is that you have to spend your money wisely, or else you will be wasting money on stuff you don’t need.
I will use my learning to help others by teaching them how to save up their money.  I will help others by teaching them about banks and check cashers, and how they work.   I will also teach them what loans, payday loans, and collateral are.  Since I have learned a lot from this book, I will help others make good choices with their money.
In conclusion I have earned a lot from this book and I will pass down my knowledge to others.  I learned ways to help others and I also learned some new vocabulary words like collateral and payday loan.  By helping others with their money they will pass on how to save money and many people will be wise with their money.
