OneUnited Bank is in search of a jingle with a $5,000 prize! We know our limitations – and as the largest Black owned bank in the country, creating a jingle is not our expertise.
We asked Kevin Ross for some ideas. His video – which is fabulous – sparked the idea to launch a jingle campaign on Tik Tok! Then Cam Anthony stepped in with his creative genius. Thank you, Kevin, and Cam!
So, today we launch the #OneUnitedJingle Contest with a $5,000 prize! Show us what you got…on Tik Tok…or Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube! You must use #OneUnitedJingle to qualify. See Official Rules.
A jingle is defined as a short song or slogan to quickly call to mind a product, service, or company. The top jingles have an edge that sets them apart from the rest.
There isn’t a magic formula to making a successful jingle, but there are some basic criteria including:
- Timelessness: A successful jingle is easily sung and remembered for generations.
- Memorable: A successful jingle marches to the beat of its own drum and has a catchy rhythm.
- Creative: A successful jingle tells a story in a creative way.
The best jingles have been around for many years including McDonald’s “I’m Loving It”, which was recently revealed to be written by Pusha T, Kit Kat’s “Give Me a Break” and State Farm’s “Like a Good Neighbor”.
In 2016, The Atlantic reported that jingles are being replaced with popular music (in many cases, Black music) to make commercials memorable. According to Wikipedia, in 1998, there were 153 jingles in a sample of 1,279 national commercials; by 2011, the number of jingles had dropped to 8 jingles out of 306 commercials.
In the music industry, a jingle became the opposite of cool. Advertising partnerships became the new “jingle”. And black artists-who created much of the blueprint for American music-became the pioneers when it came to advertising partnerships, unapologetically leveraging their musical success. Artist have learned to retain ownership of their music.
The advertising industry also changed with TV channels exploding from the 3 network stations to hundreds of cable channels, streaming services, and satellite radio. Jingles worked best with repetition, which is hard to achieve when viewers and listeners have so many options.
Consistent with the history of Black banks, OneUnited Bank’s goal is to close the racial wealth gap and make financial literacy a core value of the Black community. Check out our scorecard HERE! What better way to deliver our message than to have a catchy song? In our research, we could not find one successful jingle for a Black company. We’re about to change that! #OneUnitedJingle
